'Involuntary Witness is a compelling novel written by a state prosecutor, the scourge of local criminals who likes to write books that make his readers cry. An author that has the audacity to reveal both a flawed legal system and debunk the myth of the macho Italian man.' Observer |
Are you still hoping to discover the hidden face of Italian crime by reading English or American lady mystery writers? It must be time to move on to the real thing. Bitter Lemon Press takes you to Bologna, Genoa and Bari guided by authors who operate from the inside. Local writers who have day jobs such as prosecutors, journalists or essayists but who dedicate their nights to the arcane craft of crime writing.
Rigosi’s 'Night Bus' starts in a world of flash Bologna night clubs but soon revels in the typical chess moves and paranoid rivalries of the Italian Secret Service, the local police and the political parties. Carofiglio is a local anti-Mafia prosecutor. His Defence Counsel Guerrieri series takes place in the Southern Italian port of Bari, a town plagued by foreign and local organized crime groups that specialize in the traffic in human beings, body parts and even dabble in such workaday products as heroin or speed. Carofiglio deftly sidesteps the obvious however and concentrates his novels on the predicament of a middle aged defence lawyer perpetually in personal crisis and doing battle with the racism and corruption that undermine the local legal system.
