'Fauser's description of Munich is absolutely delicious with its ugly hippies, pretentious artists, the playing of violent porn films and allusions to Nazi paraphernalia' Shots, The Mystery Magazine |
Judging by its crime literature it would appear that the country best known for organisation has outsourced all its organised criminal activity from Russia, Albania, Bosnia and Turkey. This is certainly evident in 'The Russian Passenger' by Gunther Ohnemus, a manhunt, road movie and love story between an attractive female ex-KGB agent and a Munich cabbie.
It is however less relevant to some of our other German novels. 'The Snowman' and 'Black Ice', both cult crime novels of the 1980’s, offer sardonic insight into post-war Germany, its economy no longer booming, leaving many stranded at the edge of society, whether drug addicts, alcoholics, unemployed office workers or even flailing entrepreneurs. Premeditated violence is never far in such circumstances.
